Charming vintage porcelain figurine of the Infant of Prague. He’s made of glazed white porcelain with gold accents and wears a removable jeweled crown (a couple of jewels are missing), a satin damask robe (some stains present and lace torn at the sleeves) and red velvet mantle. His In his left hand he holds a globus cruciger (globe and cross, a Christian symbol of authority since the Middle Ages) and his right hand is raised in a gesture of benediction. His hands, feet and head are unglazed and beautifully detailed. The actual 16th-century wooden statue of the Infant of Prague is now located in the Discalced Carmelite Church of Our Lady of Victories in Malá Strana, Prague, Czech Republic. First appearing in 1556, pious legends claim that the statue once belonged to Teresa of Ávila and was consequently donated to the Carmelite friars by Princess Polyxena of Lobkowicz in 1628. The image is routinely clothed by the Carmelite nuns in luxurious fabrics with imperial regalia. The statue is venerated on Christmas and the first Sunday of May commemorating both its centenary and “episcopal coronation” in 1655. This figurine was made in Japan (both the figurine and clothing are marked and likely dates from the mid-1900s. Overall height, including crown, is 9″. Condition is very good: porcelain is intact and all elements of the clothing are present (stains, tears and missing jewels mentioned above). Great addition to a collection of Christian artifacts or home altar.
