HISTORY (from online sources):

Sir Henry Vaneย (1613 – 1662) was an English statesman who served as governor of Massachusetts in 1636 – 37.ย  Upon his return to England he attempted to be a moderating influence during and after the English Civil War but was executed for treason after the restoration of King Charles II.

Peter F. Rothermel (1812 โ€“ 1895) was an American painter from Pennsylvania.ย  He specialized in portraits and dramatic historical paintings.ย  His 1844 workย De Soto discovering the Mississippiย was purchased by the Art Union and marked his first success as an artist. His most famous paintings include Patrick Henry Before the Virginia House of Burgesses (1851), and a massive oil painting of the Battle of Gettysburg (finished in 1871) that hangs in the State Museum of Pennsylvania.

Richard Dudensing (? – 1899) was a German portrait and landscape engraver, book publisher, and educator.ย  He came to the United States about 1857 and died in New York City in 1899.

James Lawrence Claghorn (1817 – 1884) was an art collector, patron, an officer of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Philadelphia School of Design for Women.ย  Known for his print collection, he began by collecting paintings by American artists, ca. 1840.ย  In 1877, he sold his painting collection in order to devote his efforts to his print collection.ย  His private gallery in Philadelphia was open to visitors, and selections from the Claghorn Collection were exhibited in other cities.ย  After his death, his print collection was purchased by Thomas Harrison Garrett, and thereafter was known as the Garrett Collection.ย  After being on long-term loan to the Library of Congress between 1904 and 1930, the collection is now owned by the Baltimore Museum of Art.

    Wonderful experience, meticulous packaging!

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
