This antique hand-hammered copper jug likely comes from the Middle East. I’ve seen it described as both a camel water canteen and oil bottle–not sure which it actually is. The jug has two flat sides and two rounded sides. There are etched parallel lines just below the neck and shoulder and just above the bottom edge. The lid has been secured with a chain, and a metal collar around the rim accommodates two longer chains with hook allow for hanging. The chains are likely made of iron, as they are the only magnetic metal present. The hand-joined seams are “castellated, dovetailed or cramped.” There is rich patina throughout with lots of color variations; age-appropriate dents and imperfections, including a small patch on one side, all of which adds so much character and interest. Height to rim is 11″, with chain and hook extended 23″; diameter at both rim and base is 4.5″. Great decorative piece for an eclectic layered look. Display on the hearth or European-inspired kitchen; allow the lid to hang and fill with dried hydrangeas.
