Antique engraving by J. H. Engleheart (19th century English engraver) after a painting by T. C. Turner entitled “The Hippodrome.” It depicts a view of the Kensigton Hippodrome, a short-lived venture in Notting Hill. It opened in 1837 and, due to many factors that made it financially unsuccessful, it closed in 1842. The engraving depicts a horse race with spectators standing along the course; it’s interesting that the focal point is not the race but a couple on a horse-drawn carriage in the foreground left, followed by two riders. This is a fairly rare steel engraving printed by Pittman of Warwick Square, London. It was professionally matted and framed by Right Angle (Trade and Bespoke Picture Framers and Fine Art Dealers, Est. 1982), Brackley, Northamptonshire, England. Lovely mat with gold core and gold and black border; so elegant. Overall measurements are 13 1/8″ x 11″ x 5/8″. This estate piece was brought from England by its previous owners upon their retirement from their overseas careers. Superb preowned vintage (frame) / antique (engraving) condition–everything at this estate sale was immaculate.
