Antique 1911 Chromolithograph after Johannes Simon Oertel’s “Rock of Ages” 17″ x 13″

$75.00

Antique 1911 chromolithograph after Johannes Adam Simon Oertel’s “Rock of Ages” printed by James Lee Printing, Chicago.  It depicts a woman clinging to a stone cross rising from a stormy sea, perhaps following a shipwreck, illuminated from above by golden rays of light–an overly romantic and dramatic rendition of a religious theme typical of the Victorian era (the original painting dates from the 1860s).  History below.  The print is framed under glass in a rustic wooden frame painted silver with new dust cover and is ready to hang.  Colors are vibrant and the gold highlights are clearly visible.  It measures 17″ x 13″ and it’s in good antique condition.  The print, which is glued to cardboard, has a couple of tears and a few crackled areas, and the frame has some paint loss–see photos.

Great addition to a collection of religious images.

Product Information

HISTORY (from online sources): Johannes Adam Simon Oertel (1823 Fürth, Bavaria – 1909 Vienna, Virginia) was a German-American Episcopal clergyman and artist. After completing his education in Germany at Nuremberg and Munich, he began engraving, which he continued until 1848.  In 1849, he relocated to the United States and taught briefly in Newark, New Jersey.  After his marriage, he engraved plates for bank notes, painted portraits, and colored photographs.

In 1857, Oertel was elected an associate of the National Academy of Design in New York City, and in the same year he moved to Madison, New Jersey, where he painted Lament of the Fallen Spirits and Redemption.  Around this time, he was invited to assist in preparing new decorations for the new United States Capitol that was then under construction in Washington, DC.

In 1861, he transferred his studio to Westerly, Rhode Island, where he painted Father Time and his Family and The Final Harvest (1862), The Dispensation of the Promise and the Law (including 150 figures, 1863), Walk to Emmaus, The Walk to Gethsemane, Easter Morning, Magdalen at the Sepulchre, Rock of Ages, and others (1868).

His painting Rock of Ages became enormously popular and was reproduced in millions of photographs and chromolithographs and sold in both the U.S. and England.

    Wonderful experience, meticulous packaging!

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
