Salt cellars were widely used prior to the invention of the salt shaker in 1858 and were highly associated with status. They were typically made of expensive materials and highly decorated and elaborate in design. For use, each person would find a cellar with their place setting and could use their fingers or tiny spoon to add salt or pepper to their meal as they please. Salt cellars remained in popularity until around 1911 when Morton introduced the first ever non-clumping table salt.
