Vintage figurine of Seated Duiker (a type of deer) designed by John Skeaping and originally produced by Wedgwood in 1927 (see history below).ย ย The figurine bears the mark Wedgwood began using in 1940 (Wedgwood of Etruria & Barlaston, Made in England); however, based on our research, this piece is a 1980s queen’s ware reissue, which included five additional animal figurines from the original series (see history below).ย It’s in superb preowned vintage condition with no damage.ย See below for dimensions.ย Shipping included for street addresses within contiguous United States.

HISTORY (from online sources):
JOHN RATTENBERRY SKEAPING (1901 โ 1980) was an English sculptor and equine painter and sculptor (his life-size statue of Secretariat is exhibited at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, NY).ย Born in Essex in 1901, he studied art and eventually became a scholar at the Royal Academy School.ย In 1924 he won the Prix the Rome, which took him to live and work in that city where he married the sculptress Barbara Hepworth.ย Upon his return in 1926 he was introduced to Frank Wedgwood, Wedgwoodโs managing director.ย After visiting the factory, Skeaping was commissioned to model a series of animal studies for which he was paid ยฃ100.ย The series consisted of 14 figures, 10 of which eventually went into production at the end of 1927.ย These figurines included Tiger and Buck, Fallow Deer, Polar Bear, Monkeys, and both Standing and Seated Duikerโa type of deerโand Buffalo figure based on an African buffalo calf that had been born at the London Zoo in 1927.ย A 1930s Wedgwood advertising brochure described how โThe excellence of these animals proves how amply Mr. Skeapingโs studies of animal life have been repaid.โย The animal figures were produced in black basalt and also in earthenware bodies applied with a variety of matt and colored glazes, including matt white Moonstone and matt straw.ย In 1987 six of the subjects were reissued in Queenโs Ware, enabling a new generation to enjoy these striking sculptures.
QUEENโS WARE โ Wedgwoodโs enduring appeal among the worldโs royal families and heads of state began with Queen Charlotte (1744 – 1818), who ordered a set of cream-colored earthenware.ย It pleased her so much that Josiah Wedgwood was granted permission to style himself as โPotter to Her Majestyโ and call his innovative creamware โQueenโs Ware.โ

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
