Purchased from an auction with limited provenance in regards to its age or history. The back has a handwritten note stating it is from Cuzco Peru, but I have no way of dating the piece. The religious-themed oil painting is in the style of the Cusco (Cuzco) School and features an archangel with a trumpet. The Cusco School was a Roman Catholic artistic tradition brought to Peru by the Spaniards and thrived in Cusco, Peru during the Spanish Colonial period. In more recent years, the style has been appreciated by art historians and collectors who recognize it for its unique blend of European artistic techniques and indigenous cultural influences.
Instead of being stretched, the canvas appears to be glued to a stretcher. The stretcher has rabbeted corner joints. The oil painting has some paint loss around the edges and I suspect this was inserted into some sort of a frame at one time. The painting canvas has some fading and bubbling. It also appears to be unsigned. Older Cuzco School paintings date back to the 17th and 18th century. My best guess is that this one is NOT nearly that old and most likely from the 20th century, as the tradition and style has continued. The painting measures approximately 10 x 8 inches. It is beautiful and unique and would add greatly to a collection of religious artifacts. Lean unframed, or you might want to have this framed after purchase. I think a frame would really enhance it.
