Antique engraving of The Black Brunswicker by Arthur Turrell for The Eclectic Magazine after an original by John Everett Millais.ย The engraving measures 11-7/8″ x 9.5″, shows plate marks and is in good antique condition (this is from visual observation and not a professional grade) with foxing throughout.ย There’s some crinkling of the paper, but this should be minimized once the print is matted and framed.ย The back has the name “Woodruff’ written in pencil and “Gussie Woodruff” written in ink.ย The scene is beautifully evocative and captured in minute detail–note the puppy bottom left and Napoleon’s equestrian portrait top left, as well as the folds and sheen on the gown and elaborate uniform.ย Also, so interesting to note that the subjects posed individually and never actually met (history below).

HISTORY (from online sources): THE ECLECTIC MAGAZINEย began in 1844 as The Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art. ย The official title was shortened to The Eclectic Magazine in 1905, and in 1907 the magazine ceased publication.
THE BLACK BRUNSWICKER (1860) is a painting by John Everett Millais (English, 1829 โ 1896), inspired in part by the exploits of the Black Brunswickers, a German volunteer corps of the Napoleonic Wars during the Waterloo campaign and in part by the contrasts of black broadcloth and pearl-white satin in a moment of tender conflict.ย ย The painting depicts a Brunswicker about to depart for battle. ย His sweetheart, wearing a ballgown, restrains him, trying to push the door closed, while he pulls it open. This suggests that the scene is inspired by the Duchess of Richmond’s ball on 15 June 1815, from which the officers departed to join troops at the Battle of Quatre Bras.ย The woman’s dog, wearing a red ribbon like its mistress, looks on attentively.ย A copy of โNapoleon Crossing the Alpsโ can be seen on the wall.
The artwork took an estimated three months to paint.ย Charles Dickens’ auburn-haired daughter Kate Perugini modelled for the woman seen in the picture.ย The male model was an anonymous soldier who died from consumption shortly afterwards. ย The two models never actually met. ย Millais’ son explained that they both posed with wooden props. ย The soldier “clasped a lay-figure to his breast, while the fair lady leant on the bosom of a man of wood.”ย ย Millais liked the painting so much that he created a copy which remained in the possession of the family.ย The original (41โ x 27โ) resides at the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight, Merseyside, UK.

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
