Vintage Reproduction of Rembrandt’s Etching The Three Trees 18″ x 14″

$75.00

This copy of the 1643 etching The Three Trees by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606 – 1669) was “reproduced with the permission of the Minneapolis Institute of Art which holds this print in their files” as part of  the William Ladd Collection, gift of Herschel V. Jones, 1916 (history below).

From the museum’s website: “The Three Trees is the largest and most famous of Rembrandt’s twenty-six landscape etchings.  Nearly two-thirds of the image is filled with a lively passing storm, a comment on nature’s inescapable power.  A closer look, however, reveals that various human activities are unfolding beneath the roiling sky.  Up on the dike behind the three trees, a wagonload of travelers heads toward the tiny figure of an artist sketching.  At left, an angler tries his luck; at far right, two lovers try to conceal themselves in the bushes.  The three trees themselves have religious connotations, signifying not only the Trinity but also the three crosses on Calvary.”

The vellum sheet (included here) describing the etching states, “The Three Trees” [from an original etching by Rembrandt] is ever ranked as the foremost example of Rembrandt’s masterly treatment of outdoor settings in etching style.”  This reproduction bears the plate marks (see photo) and is the exact size as the print held by the Minneapolis Institute of Art–8-1/16″  x 10-7/8″.  Overall dimensions with new mat are 18″ x 14″.  I estimate this print dates from the 1940s.  Ready to frame.

Product Information

HISTORY (from online sources): Herschel V. Jones (1861 – 1928) anonymously donated more than 5,300 prints to the Minneapolis Institute of Art in 1916, establishing one of the first public print departments in the country.  These prints were from the Ladd Collection, which Jones purchased that same year.  The Ladd Collection, formed during a thirty-year period by William M. Ladd of Portland, Oregon, contained woodcuts, engravings, etchings, and lithographs tracing the history of graphic arts.  To supplement the Ladd Collection, Jones purchased rare and esoteric works that are virtually unattainable today, such as Dürer’s Saint Jerome in His Study and an extremely rare hand-colored woodcut, c. 1465, by Firabet of Rapperswil.  What came to be known as the Herschel V. Jones Collection is, to this day, the heart of the MIA’s prints and drawings collection and still is the largest gift of artwork ever donated to the MIA.

    Wonderful experience, meticulous packaging!

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
