Vintage mixed media modernist female portrait on Masonite-type board, 20″ x 16″. The portrait may be a combination of original work on artist’s paper (mostly the yellow areas) and altered photographic images (the dark areas, especially the hand in the upper left, where a pattern is visible under magnification)–see photos. Or, the entire image may be a single print altered with paint and covered with crinkled white tissue paper which, when additional paint was applied on top, created a slashed appearance. Predominant colors are yellow and black. Reminiscent of Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” and other late 19th century and early 20th century art in the symbolist and expressionist styles, this is an unusual, one-of-a-kind piece from the studio of a local Rome, Georgia, artist, done by either him or one of his students. Was it created as a study of those earlier art styles? Is it a representation of an actual person? Is it unfinished? Or is it exactly what the artist intended as a finished work? I love the raw quality of it. Although it may be tempting to frame it, I think it’s perfect as is.
