Such an interesting piece of assemblage art. A thick piece of richly stained wood, worn over the years and complete with natural worm holes is the backdrop for the interesting assortment of attached items. The art has a Florentine wooden iconography depicting the San Damiano cross. Some wear. This has a sticker on the back that say Made in Italy. The other piece of iconography is a Russian traveling icon. It is cast in metal, perhaps brass or bronze. There is a sticker on the back of this that says, ” Iconographie Des Bénédictines De Chevetogne” The Iconography most likely was from the Chevetogne Abbey in Belgium. The Monastery is known for its practice of unity and the monks are liturgically organized in two groups, one celebrating according to the Western tradition, the other according to the Eastern Byzantine tradition.
In addition to the icons, there are some old decorative hardware pieces attached including an old cabinet latch and two small drawer pulls, one attached vertically and one attached horizontally. I have to wonder if there is meaning behind these pieces showcased on the wood (and even the wood itself), but I found the piece at an estate sale and don’t have any history. It measures approximately 12.5 x 7.25 inches and is about 1 inch thick. Definitely a conversation piece and a great addition to your religious collectibles or a gallery wall.
